For drivers in Manor, U.S. 290 is an essential connection to work, school, and surrounding communities. But a troubling record of crashes has local officials calling for faster action to make the corridor safer.
According to FOX 7 Austin, crash data shows that U.S. 290 in Manor experienced approximately 2,700 vehicle crashes and 19 fatalities between 2020 and 2025. Two additional deadly crashes along the corridor over the past two weeks have renewed concerns about roadway conditions and the pace of planned improvements.
Behind those numbers are families, friends, and communities facing losses that cannot be undone. Manor leaders say safety improvements are urgently needed as the area continues to grow.
What Is Driving the Safety Concerns?
Local officials have identified several issues they believe contribute to dangerous conditions along U.S. 290, including inadequate lighting, short traffic signal cycles, and rapid population growth.
Manor City Councilwoman Sonia Wallace told FOX 7 that stretches of roadway between Manor and Elgin are extremely dark. Limited visibility can make it harder for drivers to spot stopped vehicles, roadway hazards, or the aftermath of a collision.
Officials also raised concerns about signal timing and drivers running red lights. As traffic increases, intersections can become especially dangerous when motorists speed, follow too closely, or attempt to beat a changing signal.
These concerns underscore the importance of both roadway improvements and responsible driving.
What Improvements Are Planned?
The City of Manor is working with the Texas Department of Transportation and the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority on potential solutions.
According to FOX 7, a TxDOT intersection improvement project includes lane extensions and additions, upgraded traffic signals, street lighting, and roadway repaving. Completion is expected in late 2027.
A separate proposed U.S. 290 extension between Manor and Elgin includes tolled main lanes, U-turn bridges, longer turn lanes, and signalized crossings for pedestrians and vehicles. A final decision on that project is expected in early 2028.
While these projects could address important infrastructure needs, local leaders are emphasizing the need for action before long-term construction is complete. The report also describes calls for additional traffic enforcement and staffing to address drivers who violate traffic laws.
How Drivers Can Help Reduce Risk
Drivers traveling through Manor should remain alert, particularly at intersections and along poorly lit stretches of U.S. 290. Obey posted speed limits, leave enough following distance, and approach changing signals cautiously. Put phones away and watch for pedestrians, stopped traffic, and vehicles entering the roadway.
If you encounter a crash, slow down safely and follow directions from emergency responders. Avoid sudden maneuvers that could create another collision.
Support for People Injured in Crashes
A serious collision can leave someone dealing with medical treatment, missed work, vehicle damage, and uncertainty about what comes next. Getting medical attention and keeping records of treatment, expenses, and communications can help organize the recovery process.
