The EPA has confronted Volkswagen for evading US emissions tests in their newer model diesel vehicles. The vehicles were installed with software that is being called a “defeat device” that tricks the emission test into letting it pass. When one of these vehicles is driven, 40 times the legal limits of nitrogen oxides set by the US and EPA is being ejected from the exhaust.
Because of this, Harris County is now considered a “non-attainment area”. According to US environmental law, a non-attainment area is an area that contains lower air quality than the National Ambient Air Quality Standards as stated in the Clean Air Act. Volkswagen is facing a large amount of fines and hundreds of lawsuits in the US including Houston.
The following cars are affected:
- Audi A3 (2009-2015)
- Jetta (2009-2015)
- Beetle (2012-2015)
- Golf (2010-2015)
- Passat (2012-2015)
Volkswagen led buyers to believe that their vehicles are less impactful on the environment, but they actually present a greater threat to public health. These conditions can lead to health issues such as respiratory illnesses, asthma attacks, etc.
